Robert Burns was born on January 25, 1759 in Alloway, Ayrshire, Ayrshire in Scotland and died on July 21, 1796. Though his life was short, his impact on poetry and his beloved Scotland are felt to this day, so it is not surprising that people continue to celebrate his life and work over two hundred years after his death.
The first recorded Burns supper was in 1801 in Alloway, Ayrshire when a group of his friends gathered, not in January but in July to mark the fifth anniversary of his death. Many of the traditions observed at today's Burns Suppers were established on that first gathering. Including serving haggis as the main course and whisky with which to mark the many toasts. It is only right and proper that the haggis be addressed at the beginning of the meal, as it was that first meal, for Robbie himself provided the perfect tribute in his poem, "Address to a Haggis".
